Unearthing Culinary Delights at Coin Laundry

Stepping into Coin Laundry in London’s vibrant Exmouth Market feels less like entering a restaurant and more like time-traveling to a meticulously curated, effortlessly cool bygone era. In a city brimming with new concepts, Coin Laundry carves out its own playful niche, promising more than just a meal – it offers an experience steeped in nostalgia, good vibes, and surprisingly serious food. Nestled amidst the bustling market, it stands out with its inviting glow, hinting at the lively atmosphere and delectable comfort food that lies within. We recently paid a visit to see if this unique spot truly washes away the competition or if its charm is merely skin deep.

Retro Rhythms & Unpretentious Service

The moment you cross the threshold at Coin Laundry, the theme envelops you. Think 70s and 80s living room chic meets industrial laundromat cool, without a hint of kitsch. Exposed brick, low-slung leather banquettes, and quirky art pieces, all bathed in warm, mood-setting lighting, create an intimate yet energetic space. The hum of conversation is lively, yet never overwhelming, making it ideal for both a casual catch-up and a more intimate evening. Service here is a breath of fresh air – genuinely friendly, attentive without being intrusive, and knowledgeable enough to guide you through the menu without pretension. Our server was quick with recommendations, refills, and a warm smile, contributing significantly to the relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where you feel instantly at ease, like you’ve been a regular for years.

A Menu That Hits All The Right Notes

Coin Laundry’s menu leans into modern comfort food, with a nod to American diner classics, elevated by quality ingredients and creative twists. It’s hearty, flavourful, and designed for sharing – or for indulging solo, we won’t judge. The culinary approach is straightforward yet refined, focusing on dishes that deliver big on taste and satisfaction.

Loaded Disco Fries
Our meal kicked off with the Loaded Disco Fries, a glorious pile of crispy fries smothered in cheese sauce, bacon bits, and spring onions. This isn’t just a side; it’s a statement. The fries were perfectly crisp, holding up well under the generous toppings, and the sauce was rich and gooey without being cloying. It’s the ultimate comfort food starter, setting the tone for a fun, unpretentious meal.

Crispy Chicken Burger
Next up was the Crispy Chicken Burger, a testament to how a classic can be perfected. The chicken breast was remarkably juicy, encased in a shatteringly crisp, well-seasoned coating. It was served in a soft brioche bun with a vibrant slaw and a tangy house sauce that cut through the richness beautifully. Each bite was a delightful balance of textures and flavours, proving that simple execution of quality ingredients yields exceptional results.

Vegan Reuben
For a delightful surprise, we tried the Vegan Reuben. This plant-based twist on the deli classic featured succulent pastrami-style seitan, sauerkraut, vegan cheese, and Russian dressing, all grilled between slices of rye bread. It was incredibly flavourful, with the seitan mimicking the texture of meat impressively, and the tangy and creamy elements coming together perfectly. This dish alone showcases the kitchen’s ability to cater to diverse palates without compromising on taste or creativity.

The drinks menu is equally impressive, with a strong focus on inventive cocktails that often play on retro themes. Their “Launderette Libations” are a must-try, alongside a solid selection of craft beers and wines.

The Verdict: A Clean Sweep for Coin Laundry

Coin Laundry is more than just a clever concept; it’s a genuinely excellent dining destination. It successfully marries a unique, engaging atmosphere with genuinely delicious, well-executed comfort food and outstanding cocktails. It’s the kind of place you’d recommend to friends looking for a lively night out, a relaxed brunch, or simply a fun, unpretentious meal. The prices are fair for the quality and experience offered, cementing its value proposition in a competitive London market. Whether you’re drawn in by the retro charm or the promise of a perfectly crafted burger, Coin Laundry delivers on all fronts, leaving you feeling well-fed, well-watered, and thoroughly entertained. It’s a clean sweep – we’ll definitely be back for another load.
